Why are egg prices so high?

No one could have predicted that a fridge well stocked with eggs in 2023 is a sign of wealth.

How did egg prices get so damn expensive? There was an avian flu that started in early 2022 and affected millions of chickens. And during the holidays, it made it even harder to keep up with the demand. So this caused egg prices to shoot way up. Is there some price gouging going on top of all of this too? Probably, but who knows.

The graph includes all the main food components in the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly inflation report. This data doesn’t even reflect January’s rise in egg prices since those numbers don’t come out for another two weeks. By then the red line will likely be even steeper!

As always, reminding you to build wealth by following the two PFC rules: 1.) Live below your means and 2.) Invest early and often.‎
